A small hotel delivering big flavours

Sigtuna—this charming, historic little town by Lake Mälaren—naturally has a delightful little town hotel to match. Its heritage may not stretch back a thousand years like the town itself, but as the name of the hotel’s restaurant, 1909, suggests, it still spans more than a century. And that legacy is carefully preserved—without ever feeling like a museum. Black-and-white photographs from the past invite a closer look, while classic table settings and timeless style define the airy dining room with generous lake views. Traditional afternoon coffee gatherings and weekend afternoon tea complete the experience. An institution—yet one that asks for no reverence from its guests.

Here, groups of locals gather in the bar, a well-dressed young couple celebrates something special, and a slightly older duo seems to be keeping a Friday wine tradition alive. Meanwhile, eight broad-shouldered men from the hockey club (or are they powerlifters?) combine a board meeting with a hearty meal.

They can choose between a four- or six-course menu, alongside classics such as råraka with vendace roe or the daily Swedish comfort dish—meatballs. They opt for the full tasting menu. A wise choice, as it would be a shame to miss delights like fire-grilled salmon with beetroot and brown butter emulsion, or venison loin with pumpkin cream and irresistibly crisp potato cake. And they would surely regret all week if they missed the feather-light, crispy chanterelle croquette.

The wine pairing is thoughtfully composed, featuring selections from across Europe, while the extensive wine list tempts with intriguing bottles.

Still, we’ll save that indulgence for our next visit.
