The history of the hotel
WE OPENED OUR DOORS IN 1909
When the hotel was built in 1909, the bricks were transported by barge across Lake Mälaren and hauled up from the dock by cart, then laid one by one. The original budget to complete the hotel was 50,000 kronor, but the final cost reached 93,000 Swedish riksdaler.
What is now the conference room Spritbutiken once housed the local liquor store. The room known as Lilla Torget was home to Sigtuna’s very first cinema. Notable guests such as Fritiof Nilsson Piraten and President Bhutto have been served in the hotel restaurant. On Sundays, police constables would collect steak and beer from the hotel, which they then served to prisoners before releasing them.
During a visit by King Gustav V, a guest standing on a balcony above accidentally spilled milk on the King below. However, he was soon appeased with a specially composed French menu featuring sandwiches, consommé en tasse, chicken with shrimp, lamb cutlets with fried potatoes, green peas, artichoke bottoms with whipped butter, and pineapple. The King later enjoyed a good night’s sleep in one of the hotel’s specially made beds.
Much has happened since then— and the balcony is now but a memory.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the entire hotel underwent an extensive renovation. Today, it has regained its former splendour and evokes a time when kings visited the town’s hotel. Sigtuna Stadshotell is now one of Sweden’s most distinctive design hotels, characterised by 1930s–50s style with a strong focus on Scandinavian design. A consistent design language runs throughout the hotel, from guest rooms and meeting spaces to dining rooms, bar, lounge and relaxation areas. Discover features such as the water closet, the Cobra telephone, and design classics from Hans Wegner, Louis Poulsen, Fritz Hansen and many others.
Over the years, Sigtuna Stadshotell has had several notable owners who have left their mark on both the town and the building. In 1909, the hotel was owned by the municipality, and since then figures such as Ellen Paalzow, Ragnar Lundgren and Marilyn Bellman have been at its helm.
Since early 2026, Sigtuna Stadshotell has been owned and operated by Familjen Ahlboms Restauranger, with Helena Lindquist as CEO.
